9A52-4 Tornado Multiple launch rocket system

The 9A52-4 multiple launch rocket system may be Russia’s answer to the US HIMARS. The 9A52-4 was first revealed in 2007. It is a lightweight and universal version of the Smerch MLRS. The 9A52-4 is more strategically and tactically mobile, but mobility comes at a cost of reduced firepower. This artillery rocket system is aimed both at the Russian Army and export customers.

A universal multiple launch rocket system concept offers advantages of faster reloading and simpler logistics. It is capable of firing existing types of rockets without special preparation or changes.

The 9A52-4 Tornado is fitted with a single container with six launching tubes for 300-mm rockets. It can fire all current Smerch rockets, including HE-FRAG, incendiary, fuel-air explosive, cluster with anti-personnel or anti-tank mines. Cluster rounds may also carry self-targeting anti-tank munitions. A standard rocket is 7.6 m long and weights 800 kg. Maximum range of fire is 70 km with ordinary and 90 km with extended-range rockets. Rockets are fitted with range and direction correction system for better accuracy. A full salvo of this rocket system covers area of 32 hectares.

KamAZ-63501 8×8 military truck

The KamAZ-6350 heavy utility truck is a member of Mustang family. This family of military trucks also includes smaller KamAZ-4350 (4×4) and KamAZ-5350. The 6350 model is one of the largest trucks in KamAZ range. Its development began in 1987. First prototypes were completed in the early 1990s, however this truck was officially accepted to service with the Russian Army only in 2002, as well as other trucks of the Mustang range. A low-rate production commenced in 2003.

The KamAZ-6305 is entirely conventional in design. It is a renewed version of the previous 8×8 heavy utility truck with increased payload capacity. This military truck has a payload capacity of 10. It can tow trailers or artillery pieces with a maximum weight of 12 000 kg. A wide variety of body types and shelters are available. Vehicle has fixtures for transportation of standard removable containers. A standard troop/cargo body has drop sides, drop tailgate and removable tarpaulin with bows.

A three-person cab with a sleeping berth is standard across the Mustang range. This cab can be fitted with add-on armor kit. It is also proposed with concealed built-in internal armor.

The Mustang range has a high degree of commonality. A number of components are interchangeable. Vehicle is powered by the KamAZ-740.50.360 turbocharged diesel engine, developing 360 hp. This engine is compliant with EURO II emission requirements. It has a full-time all-wheel drive. This military truck is fitted with a central tyre inflation system and recovery winch. Vehicle is fitted with engine pre-heater, which starts the engine when temperature is as low as -50°C.

There are numerous variants of the baseline model. The KamAZ-63501 has a payload capacity of 15 000 kg. Other variants include the KamAZ-6450 tractor truck and specialized artillery tractor. The KamAZ-6350 was used as a base for Pantsyr air defense system, Semser 122-mm truck-mounted howitzer, 9A52-4Naiza and Lynx multiple launch rocket systems.

A crew of two men prepares system for firing within 3 minutes, without leaving cabin. The launch vehicle is fitted with automated laying and fire control system. It is also fitted with autonomous satellite navigation and positioning system. A launch vehicle exchanges positioning and firing data with command vehicle. Rockets can be launched directly form the cab, or remotely form the vehicle. The 9A52-4 can launch single rocket, partial ripple or full salvo.

A 9A52-4 launching vehicle with an open-type reusable launcher pack is supported by a 9T234-4 reloading vehicle. It is based on the same KamAZ-63501 8×8 wheeled chassis, but has some differences. It is fitted with a crane and carries 6 individual reload rockets. The 9A52-4 launching vehicle is reloaded within 8 minutes. Reloading usually takes place away from firing position, to avoid counter-battery fire. No information is available on a reloading vehicle, which transports and reloads sealed containers.

Variants

9A53 Tornado, based on the MZKT-7930 8×8 wheeled chassis. It might become a replacement for the ageing BM-27 Uragan and Smerch MLRS. It is worth mentioning that production of the Uragan wheeled chassis (ZiL-135 LMP) ended some years ago. The Tornado carries two launching pods for 220-mm or 300-mm rockets.

Kalibr missile system (SS-N-27) An anti-shipping variant deployed by the Russian Navy, as a submarine launched missile, Its basic length is 8.22 m (27.0 ft), with a 200 kg (440 lb) warhead. Its range is 440–660 km (270–410 mi). It is a Sea-skimmer with supersonic terminal speed and a flight altitude of 4.6 metres (15 ft) at its final stage; its speed is then Mach 2.9.

“We have always built such ships – missile cruisers designed for sinking enemy aircraft carriers in particular and enemy submarines as well and able to repel massive air attacks. The Leader being planned for construction now will be a missile cruiser, in fact. The shipbuilders have not come up with an accurate classification for her yet. The press keeps on mentioning a nuclear-powered destroyer or a missile cruiser. Overall, she will be an oceangoing combatant with versatile weaponry. The ship will have the land-attack capability owing to the Kalibr [NATO reporting name: SS-N-30] long-range cruise missile system that we have seen in action in Syria,” the expert reminded. 9M100 short range missiles

The 9M100 is a short-range surface-to-air missile (SAM) being developed by the Fakel Design Bureau, part of Almaz-Antey concern, for new air defenses that should be in place within Russia by 2015. It is targeted at countering the latest generation of fighter aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles, guided bombs, supersonic missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) which pose a grave threat to ground forces and key facilities. The highly maneuverable 9M100 missile is being designed for launch by means of a vertical launching system (VLS). As of early 2010 the 9M100 missile system is associated with Vityaz medium-range air defense system and might be the primary weapon for the Morfei short-range air defense system.

The 9M100 guidance system combines an inertial navigation system (INS) with an infrared seeker along with a contact and proximity fuze which ignites the warhead. Such a guidance system means that the 9M100 missile is a fire-and-forget weapon capable of engaging multiple targets simultaneously. The solid propellant rocket motor features thrust vectoring control providing outstanding maneuverability.

Naval ‘Leader’: Russia to Fit Newest Destroyer With Nuclear Reactor

The Russian Defense Ministry has approved the initial design of the new Project 23560 Lider-class (Leader) destroyer, which will be equipped with a nuclear reactor to power the vessel, a source in Russia’s defense industry told Sputnik Thursday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The announcement comes after Igor Ponomarev, the United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) vice president for military shipbuilding told Sputnik that the Russian Defense Ministry approved the initial design for the destroyer, but did not specify which type of reactor the ministry chose.

“The design project implies the presence of a nuclear [reactor] on the perspective destroyer. This project was approved by the Russian Defense Ministry,” the source told Sputnik on Thursday.

The new Lider-class destroyer is planned to have a displacement of 17,500 tonnes, length of 200 meters (over 650 feet) and a width of 20 meters. It will have anti-aircraft, anti-ballistic missile, anti-surface and anti-submarine capabilities.

The Russian Defense Ministry has also specified that the ship would equipped with advanced Grach visual optical interference stations, which are capable of “blinding” enemy troops and optoelectronic devices, such as night vision equipment, binocular glasses and laser ranging devices with bright flares of light.

The Severnoye Design Bureau, the country’s leading company for designing surface ships, has been refining its plans for the construction of the ocean-going Leader-class destroyer since 2010.

The universal battleship is expected to be set up in 2019 and is expected to replace three classes of ships, including project 1155 anti-submarine destroyers. Source sputniknews.com

LPD Based Ballistic Missile Defense Ship – USA

HII Shows Off New BMD Ship Concept at Sea-Air-Space

An interesting ship model was unveiled April 8 by Huntington Ingalls Industries at the Navy League’s Sea-Air-Space gathering outside Washington: a ship intended primarily for the ballistic missile defense mission.

Using the basic LPD 17 hull designed for the U.S. Navy’s San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock ships — all of which are built by HII — the BMD ship incorporates an Aegis-type phased array radar atop the superstructure. The aft deck, devoid of much of the topside structure of the LPD 17, is ringed by 18 16-cell vertical launch system launchers, for a total of 288 missile cells. Like the existing Mark 41 and Mark 57 VLS launchers in the fleet, the ship’s VLS would presumably be able to launch a variety of weapons, including SM-2, SM-3 and SM-6 Standard missiles, Tomahawk cruise missiles, and other weapons.

Forward on the ship, HII placed a fairly large rail gun mount, a system now under development by the Navy.  The model features 57mm guns in mounts similar to those on the Littoral Combat Ships and Coast Guard National Security Cutters, but not the Mk 46 30mm mounts fitted to LPD 17s.

The seagoing BMD mission currently is filled by cruisers and destroyers carrying the Aegis combat system. Beyond the BMD role, the multi-mission warships can carry out a variety of roles including air warfare defense, anti-submarine warfare and surface combat, and some analysts see the BMD mission as unfairly restricting the ships’ operational abilities.

The idea of a dedicated BMD ship has been around for several years, but this is the first time a concept design has been displayed.  HII provided few details with the model other than the following characteristics:

“Design margins provide flexibility for ballistic missile defense missions with the capacity for powerful radars, mission magazines, and command and control systems.

PRIMARY SYSTEMS                                 OPTIONAL SYSTEMS

> 21′ S-Band Radar                                     Below Flight Deck Hangar

X-Band Radar                                               High Energy Weapons

Vertical Launch System (VLS)              – Laser

– Mk 41 and/or Mk 57                            – Rail Guns

Increased Power and Cooling

Aircraft Capable”

The model shows an MV-22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft on an aft elevator being lowered into a hangar.

The concept does not feature a well deck, and the aft engine uptakes are arranged on the centerline, restricting interior space in the forward hangar or mission bay.

HII representatives said a variety of propulsion and power plants could be fitted in the ship.

The LPD 17-class ships have an overall length of 684 feet, with a beam of 105 feet, providing a very large capacity for a dedicated BMD ship.

Last year, HII unveiled another stripped-down version of the LPD, dubbed LPD Flight II, offering a lower-cost alternative to the LPD 17s, which cost about $1.7 billion each. The Flight II design could be a contender for the future LSD(X) project, intended to provide replacements for today’s LSD 41 Whidbey Island-class landing ship docks. A Flight II model also is on display at Sea-Air-Space.

Stripped of the tophamper of the LPD 17 design and lacking the well deck and internal troop and vehicle stowage, the BMD ship has enough room to pack in 288 vertical missile cellsThe model features an aircraft elevator leading to a below-decks hangar. A model of an MV-22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft is shown on the elevator. An Aegis-like radar is placed atop the ship’s forward superstructure, while a notional rail gun is fitted on the fore deck.
