Upgraded T-72B3 shown in Victory Day Parade

In 2016 it has been reported that another 150 T-72B tanks will be upgraded to the -B3 or -B3M standard, and additionally fitted with new automatic transmission, similar to that of the T-90MS Tagil demonstrator. This automatic transmission has 7 forward and 1 reverse gear. The T-72B3 will become the first Russian production tank, fitted with automatic transmission. It was planned that the first batch of tanks with automatic transmissions will be delivered in 2017. Source military-today.com

The upgraded T-72B3 were first seen during rehearsal for the Victory Day Parade which has increased protection than the standard T-72B3 featuring new add-on explosive reactive armor package, which covers rear part of the turret. This tank is also fitted with cage armor, which covers rear parts of the hull and turret and improved side skirts.

The T-72B3 is one of the more advanced T-72 variants in Russian service, featuring the 2A46M-5 version of the 2A46 series of 125 mm smoothbore guns as well as the Sosna-U gunner’s sighting system, the 1A40-4 fire control system, an independent commander’s panoramic day/night sight with thermal imager, and a new ballistic computer.

Frontal coverage changes are limited to the addition of a small ERA module to the left of the gun mantlet, covering a location that is fully exposed on the T-72B3. This module appears to only contain a lower and not an upper ERA panel, probably to avoid obstructing the view of the sighting unit located above and behind it. Source janes.com
