Record Polish defence contract signed
A PLN 4.6 bln (EUR 1 bln) deal to supply the Polish army with for nearly 100 domestically manufactured AHS Krab gun howitzers was signed on Wednesday.
The eight-year contract with defence contractor Huta Stalowa Wola (HSW) is for four firing modules, each of which comprises nearly 40 military vehicles, including 24 of the self-propelled howitzers.
The deal is the largest in the history of Poland’s defence industry, according to Arkadiusz Siwko, CEO of the Polish Armaments Group (PGZ), of which HSW is a subsidiary.
The first module is expected to be delivered in 2018.
Polish Prime Minister Beata Szydło, who was at the official signing, said Poland wants to continue having Polish-manufactured equipment supplied to the Polish Army.
She said Polish armaments companies should “make up the foundation of production of equipment for the Polish army”, adding that this was in line with the governing Law and Justice (PiS) party’s programme.
“PiS’s programme clearly states that our priority is economic development based on rebuilding manufacturing … so that the armaments industry can become a flywheel of the Polish economy,” Szydłlo said. (vb)
