Nexter Systems has developed the 40 CTA series of turrets which are armed with the CTA International 40 mm Cased Telescoped Cannon System (CTCS), using internal research and development funding.
The unmanned 40 CTA turret weighs around 2,900 kg with no hull intrusion and is provided with 60 rounds of ready to use ammunition.
The secondary armament configuration depends on the customer but can include a roof mounted 7.62 mm or 12.7 mm machine gun (MG) installed in a remote weapon station (RWS) and a single anti-tank guided weapon (ATGW) mounted externally on either side of the turret.
The latter could be the latest French MBDA MMP which will be installed in a two-missile pod on the right side of the Jaguar’s two person turret. Other ATGW options include the US Raytheon/Lockheed Martin Javelin or even the Russian KBP Instrument Design Bureau Kornet-E.
Turret traverse and weapon elevation is all electric with traverse through a full 360° at a maximum of 60°/s and elevation from -10 to 45° which makes it particularly useful for urban operations.
The weapons can be aimed by the gunner using a flat panel display and associated controls, taking in information from the roof mounted stabilised sighting system which includes day/thermal sights and a laser rangefinder.
There are a number of sighting system options including those supplied by Leonardo, Safran and Thales. These have a typical detection range of up to 4,800 m with a positive target identification range of up to 3,000 m, but this depends on ambient weather conditions.
