The Royal Thai Army (RTA) is seeking to procure from Russia additional Mil Mi-17V-5 transport helicopters to replace its ageing fleet of Boeing CH-47D Chinook heavy-lift platforms, RTA chief General Teerachai Nakwanich said on 17 May.
Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has also confirmed that the purchase of the helicopters will be the subject of negotiation during his state visit to Russia, which commenced on 18 May.
IHS Jane’s understands that the RTA has a requirement to procure at least 12 additional Mi-17V-5s. The RTA has already taken delivery of five platforms ordered in two batches in 2008 and 2014 and operated by the RTA’s Bangkok-based transport unit.
