Khareef Class Corvettes, Oman

The Khareef Class corvettes are being built by BAE Systems for the Royal Navy of Oman (RNO) under Project Khareef.

Equipped with anti-air and anti-surface capabilities, Khareef Class can defend from both surface and air threats while protecting the international waters and Oman’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ).

The corvettes are used in extended surveillance patrols, deterrent operations, search and rescue missions, joint and coalition operations as well as disaster relief roles.

In January 2007, the RNO placed a £400m ($650m) order for the design and construction of three corvettes. The contract also includes the training of RNO crew and initial logistics support for the vessels.


The first ship in the class, Al Shamikh, was launched in July 2009 and delivered to the RNO in June 2013.

Al Rahmani, the second ship, was named and launched in July 2010, and delivered to the RNO in October 2013.

The final ship Al Rasikh was launched in June 2011 and delivered to the RNO by May 2014.

Design and features of Khareef corvettes

Khareef Class corvette

The modular design supported by a comprehensive weapons management system allows customers to integrate equipment and systems for specific mission requirements.

The hull is incorporated with stealthy features for reduced radar signature.

The vessel was designed to operate in high seas for a longer time period.

The corvette has a length of 99m, a beam of 14.6m and a draft of 4.1m. Displacement of the ship is 2,660t. The vessel can complement a crew of 100 people.


Command and control systems on the Khareef Class corvettes

The command and control of the corvette is based on the TACTICOS combat management system (CMS).

TACTICOS combat management system (CMS)

Thales Nederland was contracted to supply radar, the electronic support measure (ESM) system, combat management and communication equipment for three vessels in September 2007.

Using the commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware and operating systems, the TACTICOS CMS provides surveillance and picture compilation based on the information obtained from the on-board sensors and tactical data links.

The system supports the anti-air, anti-surface, anti-submarine and electronic warfare by providing threat evaluation, sensor and weapon assignment, and kill assessment. The Sting electro-optic director from Thales Nederland provides weapons control.

Functional Aspects

STING-EO Mk2 with its lightweight director is suitable for installation in naval vessels of any size. A high level of automation ensures fast and accurate performance combined with a low workload.

STING-EO Mk2 provides automatic target acquisition through I-band on remote 1D, 2D or 3D designation; subsequent I/Kband tracking is performed automatically.

In addition, STING-EO Mk2 offers optronic track capability. Target data can be derived simultaneously from radar and optronics.

Automatic best data source selection (I/K) ensures optimal track accuracies supported by TV/IR camera tracking and laser range finding.

Under control of a command and control system, STING-EO Mk2 offers support functions such as sector search (with automatic target detection), missile launch detection, projectile position measuring during gun fire and kill assessment support. Facilities for calibration, tilt and alignment corrections are also provided.

Extensive built-in test facilities support both operator and maintainer.

Khareef missiles

The Khareef Class is armed with MM40 Exocet Block 3 surface-to-surface missiles and vertically launched Mica surface-to-air missile system supplied by MBDA. The MM40 Block 3 can engage targets within a range of 180km.

The MM40 Block 3 is the latest, and extremely advanced, Exocet derivative featuring added coastal attack capability, while enhances the proven long range anti-ship capability of the MM40 missile.
A new propulsion system will be provided to the Block 3 missile to extend its operational range out to 180 km. Block 3 missiles will be fully compliant with evolving vertical launch requirements.
Block 3’s new airframe will feature reduced radar (RCS) and Infrared (IR) signatures as well as enhanced maneuverability allowing flight stealth conditions for increased survivability. The guidance package will combine GPS/INS and a new J-band seeker providing new attack profiles and reduced jam vulnerability. The Block 3 will be armed with a new warhead to better adapt to the coastal attack role.

The new MM40 Block 3 missile will be available in 2006. MBDA is marketing the Block 3 as an upgrade kit for retrofitting to existing MM40 missiles. The French Navy intends to upgrade currently deployed Exocet MM40 Block 2 missiles to the Block 3 standard. Source

Mica surface-to-air missile system

Description Of The VL MICA System

The Vertical Launch (VL) MICA system is a short range surface-to-air system which uses the MICA missile, and is available with two ultra-modern seekers : electromagnetic (EM) and infra-red (IR). It can be used in the most severe electronic or IR countermeasure environments with a very high probability of target hit. It has a superior interception range of around 10 kilometres against moving targets, and an altitude range of up to 33,000 feet (10,000 metres).

The VL MICA offers a real multiple target engagement capability (“fire-and-forget”, all weather) against all types of targets (fast jets, helicopters, missiles, guided weapons… )

In the naval self-defence version, the basic configuration of the VL MICA system includes 8 MICA munitions and a launch sequencer.

The VL MICA is designed for installation on ships of low tonnage, and has the advantages of compactness and easy integration with naval combat systems. Source

MSI DS30M 30mm guns

The 30mm DS30M Mark 2 is a ship-protection system made by MSI-Defence Systems consisting of a 30mm Mark 44 Bushmaster II cannon on an automated mount. It was designed to defend Royal Navy frigates from fast inshore attack craft armed with short-range missiles, rockets, rocket-propelled grenades, heavy machine guns or explosives. It replaced in this role the 30mm Oerlikon KCB gun on the DS30B, a similar powered mounting. The DS30M has also been added to patrol boats and corvettes for the Iraqi and Omani navies respectively. The main gun fitted forward is an Oto Melara 76/62mm super rapid gun. The gun has a rate of fire of 120 rounds a minute. The corvettes are also armed with two MSI DS30M 30mm guns.

Radars aboard the RNO craft

The SMART-S Mk2 3D multibeam radar operating in S-band provides medium-to-long-range surveillance and target designation. It acts as a main air and surface search radar in the single radar concept implemented for a range of naval ships including light frigates, corvettes and landing platform docks (LPD).

The system can lure incoming modern sensor-guided missiles by firing decoy rounds.

Aircraft landing space

The corvette has a flight deck to support the operations of a medium sized aircraft. The helideck can accommodate a helicopter with a maximum weight of 12t. The ship is equipped with hangar and maintenance facilities for the embarked helicopter.

Propulsion and power

Khareef Class is powered by two MTU diesel engines. Designed to deliver fuel efficiency and low whole life costs, the propulsion system provides a maximum speed of 25kts, a range of 4,500m and an endurance of 21 days.

Rolls-Royce was contracted to supply controllable pitch propellers, gensets, electric equipment and steering gear for three ships.

The Khareef Class corvettes are equipped with high-quality accommodation and recreational facilities for crew members.

The ship has dedicated areas for each officer and rating. Joint force command staff are provided with additional living areas.
