Russia’s Koalitsia-SV (Coalition-SV) self propelled artillery system (SPA)

The 2S35 Koalitsiya-SV (coalition) is a new Russian self-propelled howitzer. It is a successor to the 2S19 Msta-S. It is also intended to replace ageing Russian 152-mm artillery systems. Currently it is one of the most capable howitzers in the world.


The first demonstrator was completed in 2006. This unique self-propelled howitzer had two 152-mm guns. It used a number of components from the previous 2S19 Msta-S. The twin-barrel Koalitsiya-SV demonstrator had a higher rate of fire than current artillery systems. It could fire at around 16 rounds per minute.

Even though the Koalitsiya-SV resembles the older 2S19 Msta-S, it is a totally different system. It has unmanned turret and is armed with a 152-mm gun. It has a fully automated ammunition loading and handling system. It utilizes a modular charge system. This artillery system can fire a wide range of munitions, including standard and rocket-assisted HE-FRAG projectiles, cluster projectiles with anti-tank submunitions, jammer carrying projectiles. Range of fire with standard projectile is around 30 km and around 40 km with rocket-assisted projectile.

Also in the exposure of the international military-technical forum “Army 2017” it was presented created within the same OCD “Coalition-BP” 152-mm mortar shell with a concrete-3G4. The shot is designed to defeat the field fortification and other defensive structures, infrastructure facilities and the rear. It is used for firing from the 152-mm self-propelled howitzer 2S35 “Coalition-SV”.

Shot consists of 3G4 with the projectile fuze screwed bottom, complete variable modular propellant charge 4-Z- 27 and an electric shock tube. Before screwing the fuse, the point is closed by a blank stopper. 

Shell 3G4 consists of a body with a floating copper lead band, a ballistic tip, a bursting charge, a screw bottom and a threaded ring.

The shell of the shell is steel, with a solid head. The ballistic tip is fixed to the body by means of a thread. At the bottom of the body is a chambers, in which a discontinuous charge is placed. The rupture charge is closed by a screwed bottom, on top of which the threaded ring is screwed. Between the screw bottom and the body is embedded a lead gasket, designed to protect the explosive charge from the effects of powder gases. 

A bottom fuse is screwed into the threaded point of the screwed bottom. Between the flange of the fuse and the screwed bottom is also put a lead gasket.

2S35 Koalitsiya-SV SPG Firing declassified footage


A new long-range precision-guided round has been developed in Russia. It has a maximum range of 70 km and high level of accuracy. The Koalitsiya-SV It is also capable of firing older Krasnopol precision guided munitions with a range of 20 km.

For export customers the 2S35 Koalitsiya-SV can be fitted with a 155-mm gun, compatible with standard NATO ammunition.

Maximum rate of fire is around 8 rounds per minute. It seems that the Koalitsiya-SV is capable of multiple round simultaneous impact firing.

This artillery system carries impressive onboard ammunition supply of around 60 to 70 rounds. It has a separate ammunition reloading system at the rear of the turret that allows to load ammunition from resupply truck.

The Koalitsiya-SV has an automatic targeting and charge selection system.

Vehicle has a remotely controlled weapon station, armed with a 12.7-mm machine gun. It can be used for self-defense against air and ground targets.


The Koalitsiya-SV has a high level of automation. It allowed to reduce the crew. This artillery system is operated by a crew of only three men, including commander gunner and driver. Crewmembers are located in a well protected compartment at the front of the hull.

Armor of this vehicle protects the crew against small arms fire and artillery shell splinters. Vehicle is also fitted with NBC protection and automatic fire suppression systems.

The Koalitsiya-SV uses new tracked chassis. It uses components of the T-90 main battle tank. General layout of the chassis resembles that of the T-90, but the front is heavily modified to accommodate the crew. It is likely to be powered by a turbocharged diesel engine, developing around 1 000 hp.


Vehicle has a built-in self-entrenching blade and can dig itself a trench within 12-40 minutes, depending on the ground type.

It was planed that a wheeled version of this artillery chassis, based on a 8×8 high mobility truck, would be developed.


In 2013, a project of wheeled self-propelled howitzer using the same turret and armament as the Koalitsiya-SV was presented during the Russia Expo Arms defense exhibition. A drawing of the project was unveiled, showing an 8×8 KamAz truck chassis fitted with a turret and armed with one 152mm cannon. According, KamAZ spokesman Oleg Afanasyev, the new howitzer will be based on the four-axle KamAZ-6560 truck. The new howitzer will reportedly be fully automatic, meaning that the crew will remain in the armoured cab for the loading and firing sequence.” @armyrecognition.com

Harbin Z-19/E Black Whirlwind Attack Helicopter

In July 2010 the Chinese aviation firm AVIC revealed the first prototype of the new home-grown WZ-19 anti-armor attack helicopter. The prototype may have flown during May 2010. The Z-19 prototype was undergoing a test flight at the Harbin Aircraft Industrial Corporation [HAIC] airfield. It was reported that one prototype crashed on September 18, 2010.


The new Chinese Army Aviation WZ-19 attack helicopters are mainly used to attack tanks and other heavy targets. The new Harbin/AVIC WZ-19 attack helicopter is based on the Z-9W anti-armor attack helicopter, which itself was derived from the license-built AS-365N. The WZ-19 used the engines (WoZhou WZ8A?), rotor, aft fuselage and tail section (including Fenestron tailrotor) with minor modifications from H425 [one of the recent upgraded variants of the Z-9] which speeds up the development. Unlike the the Z-9W, which was basically an wide-body armed utility helicopter, the WZ-19 features a new narrow forwarded fuselage with tandem compact layout similar to that of the other gunship helicopters like Z-10, TAI/Agusta Westland T-129, AH-1Z Viper, AH-64 Apache, Eurocopter Tiger, Mil Mi-28 and HAL Light Combat Helicopter.


The WZ-19 features a narrow forward fuselage and a tandem cockpit layout similar to those of Z-10, but with reversed seating – the pilot sitting in the front seat and gunner in the back seat. Both crew are protected by armor plates, crash-resist seats and non-retractable front landing gears. It also features a Z-9WA style nose mounted EO turret (FLIR, TV and laser range finder), with armament consisting of on 30mm canon in chin turret. The helicopter can also carry the air-to-air and air-to-ground weapon package similar to that of Z-9WA under a pair of stub wings, including KD-8 ATGMs, PL-90 AAMs as well as 23mm gun pods and rocket lanchers.

The Hong Jian-8 or Red Arrow-8 is the primary anti-tank missile system of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA). The HJ-8 entered service between 1984 and 1988 and was China’s attempt at a man portable guided missile comparable to those used by NATO and the Warsaw Pact.

Like many Chinese-made weapons, the HJ-8 borrowed heavily from foreign models. Its appearance and assembly suggests it was influenced by the French MILAN, the American BGM-71 TOW, and the Soviet Konkurs. These were all second-generation wire-guided systems and the HJ-8 was a very late addition to the lineage.

Its worth noting the HJ-8’s guidance system and launcher rests on a tripod—like the TOW—but its firing mechanism resembles the MILAN. When launched, with the operator either crouched or seated behind the guidance system, the missile pushes its launch tube backward away from the operator. The latest variant of the HJ-8 used by the PLA even resembles the Russian Kornet ATGM.

Z-19E China-made attack chopper makes maiden flight: Here


The China-made attack helicopter Z-19E made its maiden flight from a Harbin airport on Thursday, marking a major step in China’s entry into the global market for attack helicopters.

Also called the “Black Whirlwind,” the Z-19E is the first export-oriented attack helicopter developed by the AVIC Harbin Aircraft Industry Group. Based on the Z-19’s design, the 19E can be used in quick-response, low-impact and frequent attack missions, China National Radio reported.

Mil.huanqiu.com says a new version of China’s Z-19 attack helicopter was in display on September 14 when the 4th China Helicopter Exposition opened. The Z-19 has a mystic round box on top of its rotating wing similar to that of US AH-64E Longbow Apache. It is believed that like AH-64E, Z-19 has installed a millimeter-wave radar.

The Chinese MMW FCR adopts western approach of using a single antenna, similar to AN/APG-78 used for AH-64D Apache Longbow. The radar is designated as YH, short for Yu Huo (浴火), meaning bathing in fire. YH MMW FCR is fully integrated with other subsystems of the onboard electronic warfare system, such as radar warning receivers (RWR), laser warning receivers (LWR), electronic support measures (ESM), and electronic countermeasures (ECM), with the entire EW system on board Z-10 named after the radar.
